Welcome to pastel artist Susan Brooke’s website where you can view a sample of the pastel paintings she has created from her Sussex studio overlooking the South Downs.
Susan has spent the last couple of years developing her own painterly style using her favourite medium of hand-made soft pastels. Susan’s subject matter is the lovely Sussex countryside but she also enjoys portraiture, life studies and anything to do with snow.
More recently, she has turned her attention to creating a series of paintings that incorporates a figure or figures into a scene of urban wall art. In these pictures, Susan is looking to create an atmosphere and an intriguing narrative. All of these pictures have been inspired by the ephemeral nature of graffiti and wall art that she has encountered in and around Brighton City centre on land that is due for redevelopment.
Two of these pictures ‘Urban Angel I & II’ were selected and shown in the Pastel Society’s Annual Exhibition in 2016. A third painting – ‘Check Mates’ – was short-listed in the National Open Art (NOA) 2016 Competition. A fourth picture ‘Walls have eyes’ was shown at the Pastel Society’s Annual Exhibition 21 February – 04 March 2017, Mall Galleries, London SW1.
“Pastels are the most exciting of all the mediums. What better than to grab a small piece of chalk and make an immediate blast of colour. No mixing, no fiddling around with Flow Improvers or Slow Drying mediums, no brushes to keep clean. Just pure colour at your fingertips.”
Cheryl Culver, former President of the Pastel Society
